Trustee in the News
Trustee Bill Grayson shares his financial insight with Bay Area viewers each week as stock market commentator for San Francisco’s KRON 4 television. Bill provides expert commentary on stocks, the Federal Reserve, and the economy for the NBC affiliate station. Bill is president of Falcon Point Capital, LLC, a SEC registered investment advisor and hedge fund management company. He is frequently quoted in the press (Bloomberg, NY Times, etc.), and is a regular speaker on investing and the hedge fund. Prior to joining Falcon Point, Bill was vice president of J.P. Morgan in San Francisco, and previously was vice president of Montgomery Securities (the predecessor to Banc of America Securities).

A new book by Dr. Cynthia Stokes Brown, professor emerita of education and American Book Award winner, melds traditional history with the latest scientific thought in her newest book Big History: From the Big Bang to the Present.
North Bay Top Project
The North Bay Business Journal recently named Dominican’s Science Center a “Top Project” in the North Bay for 2007. In its citation, the journal noted that “The new Science Center at Dominican University significantly advances education in the sciences and will include unique opportunities for undergraduate research."

Imposter Phenomenon
Psychology professor Dr. Gail Matthews talks with The Chronicle of Higher Education about her research on the impostor phenomenon. A study conducted several years ago by Dr. Matthews and colleagues found that about 70 percent of people from all walks of life have felt like impostors for at least some part of their careers.
Master's Degree in Age Research
A proposed master's program in age research was the subject of news articles in both the Marin Independent Journal and the North Bay Business Journal. Dominican currently is talking with the Buck Institute for Age Research about offering this first-of-its-kind program.
Little Rock Nine
Melba Beals, chair of the Department of Communications, talks with the San Jose Mercury News about her experiences as a member of the Little Rock Nine, the nine African-American teenagers who 50 years ago advanced the civil rights movement with the integration of Little Rock Central High School. Among the media outlets covering the 50th anniversary celebrations, hosted by President Clinton in Little Rock, were the BBC, CNN, ABC, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal.

Sarah Tinsley Demarest, who received her MBA from Dominican in 2003, has been appointed vice president of public affairs for the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) in Washington, DC. Previously, Sarah served as the Deputy to the United States Ambassador to the United Nations (UN), where she was an advisor on national security matters, policy development, communications and executive planning for the President’s Permanent Representative to the UN. Prior to this position, Sarah served as the Senior Advisor to the Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security. Sarah has more than 20 years of experience in public and Congressional affairs and policy development for the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

On Sunday, December 9 more than 150 visitors tourned the Edgehill Mansion to hear about the University’s plans to transform Edgehill Mansion into the Dominican Heritage and Alumni House. Dominican’s plans to renovate the Edgehill Mansion were recently featured in the Marin Independent Journal.

The California state budget proposal released by Governor Schwarzenegger which includes an estimated $4.8 billion cut to education funds cuts may impact prospective students’ confidence in pursuing Dominican’s Credential and Masters in Education program. Market research has shown that with one third of California’s teachers anticipated to retire within the next decade, that the program should experience a surge in inquiries and applicants. Dominican needs to be aware that the state budget proposal may counteract the perception that it is a stable and growing market.
As previously reported, Dominican is receiving accolades for the GreenMBA program. It is critical that the University also practice what it teaches. A current challenge facing the University is to further implement sustainable practices in its business operations. An internal committee is making recommendations that will require organizational buy-in and resources.
