Women's Volleyball splits Cal Pac Opening Matches

Intercollegiate competition returned to the Conlan Gym for the first time this year as the Lady Penguins of Women's Volleyball began their Cal Pac Conference schedule.

Dominican won their home opener on Thursday in an impressive 3-0 win over rival Bethany University, 25-23, 25-18, 25-15. They fell short, however, against Menlo College on Saturday night. After winning the first game of the match 25-23, they lost a thrilling Game 2, 26-28 and couldn't recover, losing the third and fourth games, 15-25, and 16-25.

For the week, Junior Outside Hitter and last year's Conference MVP Gabby Pecora averaged 1.86 kills/game and led the team in total service aces with 8. Pecora also led the team on defense with 3.0 digs per game. Junior Outside Hitter Lorel Grande also played well for the Lady Penguins, tying for the team lead in kills (2.57/game) and coming in second for hitting percentage (.213), service aces (5) and digs (2.86/game). Senior Outside Hitter Amanda Wagner led the team in hitting percentage (.282) and shared the lead in kills (2.57/game). Sophomore Setter Brooke Swingle averaged 7.29 assists per game.

The team's record now stands at 1-4 with a 1-1 record in conference play. They look to get back on track this Wednesday as they host Cal State East Bay at the Conlan Center Gym. That match will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Men's Soccer struggles on offense in two matches

The Dominican Men's Soccer team is still looking for its first win of the season after taking a 2-0 loss against Fresno Pacific last Tuesday and coming up with a 0-0 tie against Chaminade University of Hawaii on Sunday.

Against the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific, the team managed only two shots on goal and six shots overall in a game marred by fouls and referee cautions.

The team played better in their game against Chaminade on Sunday, coming up with several key defensive stops. Sophomore Goalkeeper Alex Bolt had four saves. Sophomore Forward Tim Pinella had three shots on goal in the second half but was stymied by some timely goalkeeping for the Swords of Chaminade (nine saves overall) as the game went scoreless through two ten-minute extra periods.

The team's record now stands at 0-2-2 as they begin Conference play this week. The team hosts the Hawks of Holy Names University on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. before heading to Cal State Maritime this Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. match.

Women's Soccer ties Fresno-Pacific University

The Lady Penguins of Dominican Women's Soccer had a 2-2 tie on Wednesday, hosting the Lady Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific.

Sophomore Forward Bridget Folan had two goals, both assisted by Junior Midfielder Eleanna Mendez. Folan and Mendez have been lynch-pins for the Dominican offense throughout the last two seasons. All four of the game's goals were scored in the first half, and two twenty minute extra periods could not decide the game.

The team's record now stands at 3-2-1 as they begin conference play. They host Holy Names University on Wednesday in a 4:00 p.m. match at Forest Meadows Field.
