Women's Soccer : Lady Penguins are 3-0

The Dominican Women's Soccer team has opened its year with wins over Southern Oregon, the Masters College and College of Idaho.

Several Lady Penguins have provided critical contributions to the team's success thus far. Junior Eleanna Mendez has scored two goals, including the game winner against College of Idaho, a "golden goal". In her first matches as a Penguin, Freshman Katie Brown has provided a tremendous jolt with her long kicks, scoring both goals against Masters College and collecting assists in the other two wins. Brown's performance earned her Cal Pac Player of the Week honors. Sophomore Goalkeeper Alicia Paulsen was also tremendous against Masters with 12 saves.

With their record at 3-0 record, the team will play its next match, Sept. 12th at Westminster. Their next home game will come on Wednesday, Sept. 17th against Fresno-Pacific with a 3:00 pm start time.

Men's Soccer opens season with loss

The Dominican Men's Soccer team began its 2008 season with a heart-breaking 3-2 loss to San Francisco State University on Thursday evening at the Conlan Field, falling late in the second overtime period.

Sophomore Ryan Vella - who scored both goals for the Penguins - tied the game at two late in the second half, sending the game into sudden-death overtime. After a scoreless first overtime period, the Gators of SF State capitalized, leaving with a win.

Despite the loss, the Penguins showed they could play against a strong NCAA Division II opponent. They'll look to even their season record on Saturday, Sept. 13th as they host the Masters College with a 1:00 pm start time.

Women's Volleyball starts the season

The Dominican Women's Volleyball team opened the season 0-3 at the Westmont Invitational in Santa Barbara this past weekend.

Facing tough competition from Cal Baptist (the #2 team in the nation), San Francisco State and the host Warriors of Westmont College, the Lady Penguins hit only .027 as a team. Junior Gabby Pecora - last year's Cal Pac Conference MVP - led the team with 21 kills in  and a .107 attack average. Pecora also led the team with 2.78 digs per game. Senior Amanda Wagner and Junior Lorel Grande also played well with 14 kills a piece over the three matches, and accounting for nearly half of the team's blocks. Sophomore Setter Brooke Swingle averaged 5.67 assists per game.

Despite the tough start, the team is looking forward to Conference play, where they hope to repeat as Cal Pac Champions in their final season in the conference. Their next match will serve as both their home and conference opener as they host Bethany University on Thursday, Sept. 18th at the Conlan Center. The match will begin at 7:00 pm.
